What is Intent routing?

Intent routing is the process of classifying an inbound Instagram comment or message by buyer intent (such as price, dates, or booking) and sending it to the correct automated template or AI agent path.

How it works

Rules match explicit keywords first. When comments are messy, an AI classifier picks the closest intent and invokes the right template, similar to how LLMs call tools by name.

Each intent can have its own variables, follow-up questions, and handoff rules.

Key components

Intent catalog, keyword maps, classifier model or rules, template library, logging per intent for analytics, and escalation when confidence is low.

Examples

"June availability" and "any slots next month" both route to the dates intent without maintaining ten keyword variants.

Off-topic comments route to a polite deflect template instead of polluting sales metrics.

When intent routing pays off

When one post attracts multiple question types, when typos and slang break keyword lists, or when you run many offers on one account.

How IGThreadly implements intent routing

IGThreadly combines multi-keyword triggers with AI classification per intent, then runs the matched template in the DM and AI agent inbox. See the ManyChat alternative comparison for how this differs from flow builders.

FAQ

Intent routing: common questions

It is a metaphor: each intent behaves like a tool the system invokes with the comment as input. IGThreadly uses this pattern in product copy.
