WhatsApp handoff is the operation of transferring an active inbound lead from another channel into a WhatsApp Business API thread while preserving the lead's identity, qualification answers, and conversation history.

How it works

Handoff is triggered when an upstream surface (Instagram DM, web form, ad lead, or voice call) decides the next step is a WhatsApp conversation. The system creates or reuses a WhatsApp thread, attaches the same lead record, and seeds the thread with prior answers so the buyer never repeats themselves.

Most production handoffs use a session message inside the 24-hour customer service window, or a pre-approved template message when the window has already closed.
